The Centre appointed Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), according to a notification issued on Saturday.
Rahatkar’s appointment, made under Section 3 of the National Commission for Women Act, 1990, will last for a term of three years or until she reaches the age of 65, whichever comes first.
Her tenure is set to begin immediately, and the formal announcement will be published in the Gazette of India.
Alongside Rahatkar’s appointment, the government has also named new members to the NCW. Dr. Archana Majumdar has been appointed as a member of the commission for a three-year term, as confirmed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s official notification.
Vijaya Rahatkar, currently serving as the National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Co-Incharge of the party’s Rajasthan unit, has held a range of key positions within the party over the past several decades.
Vijaya Rahatkar completed her Bachelor’s degree in Science with a major in Physics and her Postgraduate degree in History from Pune University.
She hails from the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. With no political background, Rahatkar joined the BJP in 1995 as a booth worker and gradually advanced within the party.
She served as an elected member of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation from 2000 to 2010 and was elected as the Mayor of Aurangabad from 2007 to 2010.
